Background Stat2 is one of seven members of the Signal transducer and activators of transcription (Stats) family. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by the receptor-associated kinases, and then form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the cell nucleus where they act as transcription activators. Stat2 is a latent transcription factor that functions both as a signal transducer in the cytoplasm and an activator of transcription in the nucleusStat2 is phosphorylated at Tyr69 by JAKs. Additionally, upon activation, Stat2 will form a multi-protein DNA-binding complex with Stat-1 and ISGF3?p48. This activation subsequently allows the complex to translocate to the nucleus & bind specific enhancer elements.
