| Background | Omentin, also known as intelectin 1, is a calcium-dependent lectin with affinity for furanosides, such as galactofuranosyl in bacterial arabinogalactans. 3kD of apparent molecular weight of Omentin migrate at 4-kD under reducing conditions due to glycosylation. Omentin, a novel visceral fat depot-specific secretory protein, enhance insulin-stimulated glucose transport in subcutaneous as well as omental adipocytes and may therefore be implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity. Omentin is a visceral fat depot-specific secretory protein. Omentin mRNA is expressed predominantly in visceral adipose tissue and is barely detectable in subcutaneous fat depots in humans and rhesus monkeys. Omentin mRNA is expressed in stromal vascular cells, but not fat cells. Omentin does not affect basal but enhanced insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in human adipocytes. |
