| Immunogen | The immunogen was a recombinant protein. This antibody was produced from a rabbit immunized with the immunogen. The IgG fraction was purified from rabbit serum followed by Protein A/G affinity chromatography. |
| Background | Hepcidin is a peptide hormone produced by the liver. It was discovered in 2, and appears to be the master regulator of iron homeostasis in humans and other mammals.Hepcidin functions to regulate (inhibit) iron transport across the gut mucosa, thereby preventing excess iron absorption and maintaining normal iron levels within the body. Hepcidin also inhibits transport of iron out of macrophages (where iron is stored). Thus, in states of high hepcidin levels (including inflammatory states), serum iron levels can drop because iron is trapped inside macrophages. This leads to anemia. In humans, HAMP is the gene that encodes for hepcidin. |
