Lipid- and polymer-based transfection reagents deliver plasmid DNA, siRNA, mRNA, or CRISPR RNP into mammalian cells. Reagent choice drives transfection efficiency and viability, which together determine experimental success.

Pick by cargo and cell type.

1. Cargo. Match reagent chemistry to cargo class (DNA, siRNA, mRNA, RNP). Some reagents work for multiple cargo classes; others are cargo-specific.
2. Cell type. HEK293 and HeLa transfect with almost anything. Primary T cells, neurons, and pluripotent stem cells need specialised reagents or electroporation.
3. Serum compatibility. Serum-free transfection medium often required during the transfection step.
4. Toxicity. Some reagents stress cells enough to confound phenotypic assays. Test toxicity at your working concentration.
5. Scalability. Microplate, T-flask, and bioreactor-scale formats available; verify for protein production work.
